今年度調査を実施した像のうち主要なものをかかげる。・鎌倉・建長寺宝冠釈迦如来坐像 寄木造りまたは割矧ぎ造り、肉身金泥塗り・衣部漆箔、玉眼。製作は14世紀後半。三門楼上安置。法衣を台座から垂下する、鎌倉地方を中心に流行した典型的な作例。・鎌倉・東慶寺聖観音菩薩踏下像 割矧ぎ造り、彩色、玉眼。製作は14世紀前半。右手を腰脇につき、左足を踏み下げる。像内に光明真言を墨書した紙を納入していたという。・静岡・乗光寺滝見観音踏下像 一木造り、漆箔、玉眼。製作は13世紀末から14世紀前半。左手を腰脇につき、右足を踏み下げる。乗光寺の開創(1374年)を遡る。伝来不明であるが、円覚寺またはその塔頭から移された可能性が高い。・栃木・能仁寺宝冠釈迦三尊坐像 寄木造り、肉身金泥(後補)衣部漆箔、玉眼。製作は中尊が13世紀末から14世紀前半。法衣を台座から垂下する。脇侍は14世紀末。能仁寺は、梵鐘(1718年作)銘によれば不識妙宥が康永2年(1343)に開創したと記すが、秀巌玄梃という僧が少なくとも1320年以前に住したと記す史料がある。もし1320年以前の開創で、当初の本尊ということになれば宝冠釈迦如来像、また法衣を垂下する初期の作例として、重要な問題を提起する。・愛媛・等妙寺観音菩薩踏下像 寄木造、素地・切金、玉眼。製作は14世紀中頃か。唯一、片足を立膝(この像では左足)とする像として重要。鎌倉から移されたものと推測できるが、移動の経緯を調査中。残念ながら製作年代、作者、関与した僧侶が確定できる像は見出せなかった。また、像が当初安置されていた場所から移動していないことを確かめられる例もない。したがって当初の目的にかなった成果を示すのは現段階ではむずかしい。しかし、今後も調査を進め、資料を蓄積することにより、問題の解明を果たしたい。なお、平成11年度中に観音菩薩踏下像についての論文を執筆する予定である。
