本研究は,バーチャルリアリティとリアリティに焦点を当て,保育場面における幼児のバーチャルリアリティ体験に関する観察事例をもとに,幼児期のコンピュータ体験について検討した。具体的には,パソコン上での小鳥の飼育と鳥かごでの小鳥の飼育との相違をみた。その成果をまとめると次のようになる。パソコンは保育の環境として,また遊具の一つとして,問題なく幼稚園に馴染むといえる。さらに,パソコンの基本的な操作は年長児でも容易に学習ができ,コンピュータリテラシーの観点でみれば保育環境としての可能性はあるだろう。しかし,幼児の特性から,虚と実の問題は残されている。これまでも幼稚園では虚の空間を作り出したり,保育者も空想の世界を大事にする傾向にあるわけだから,これ以上のバーチャルリアリティは必要ないだろう。保育の環境としてコンピュータが位置づくかどうかは教師の保育観次第である。コンピュータを環境設定する場合でも,幼児の実態に即して,何がふさわしい生活か,幼児の内面に何が育ってほしいかを見極める必要がある。そうした意味で,教育課程の編成において,系統性や連続性のある保育を実現していくためには,コンピュータの力を借りるまでもないか。本物の鳥の事例のように,逃げていなくなったという現実から,幼児たちは生命や自然に直面した。山に探しに行くというダイナミックな活動や鳥の絵をかくという創作活動も生まれた。それはバーチャルリアリティには不得意な分野である。本研究は鳥の飼育という限られた視点での結果であるので,コンピュータ教育の賛否は性急すぎる。なぜなら,ソフト次第で多様なバーチャルリアリティ体験ができるというメディアの特性があるからである。今後,実証的資料を積み重ねる必要があるだろう。
