本年度は、前年度に調査、収集した資料をもとに、19世紀アメリカにおけるアメリカ先住民女性の作家として、いかにして当時の白人中心的イデオロギーと折衝する言説を作り出しているかという点を検証の中心課題とした。特に、本年度においては、米国国会図書館の特別資料閲覧室で収集した19世紀から20世紀にかけてアメリカの大衆文化の中心的役割を果たしたダイムノベル(Dime Novels)に関する資料から、ダイムノベルが、モーニングドーブの文学的創造性にどのように関わっているかに着目した論文を作成することに専念した。ダイムノベルとは、印刷と流通のシステムの近代化による文化の物質的な変容によって誕生したいわゆる三文の大衆小説であるが、量産され、大衆化される文学の中で作り出される言説は、同時に、そこで好んで描かれた西部やアメリカ先住民などのイメージをステレオタイプ化する大衆の意識を形成するプロセスにも加担していた。白人文化の優勢の結果として形成された大衆意識に対し、拙論文では、まず、ダイムノベルによって作り出されたアメリカ先住民の大衆的イメージとは具体的にどのようなものであったかを示し、次に、社会的他者の作家であるモーニングドーブにとって、そのようなステレオタイプに抵抗する意識が、小説の定義する問題とヒロイン像決定の重要な背景になっていたことを究明した。以上の成果を、「ダイムノベルと20世紀初頭の大衆的イメージへのモーニングドーブの文学的抵抗(“Dime Novels and Mourning Dove's Literary Resistance to Turn-of-the-Century Mass Images")」と題し、1998年10月にカナダ、アルバータ州で開催された西部文学会(米国)とカナダアメリカ研究学会の合同学会で口頭発表した。
