项目摘要

平成10年8月13日から15日にかけて行なわれた釜ケ崎夏祭りとその準備から撤収に至る期間、および平成11年12月29日から平成10年1月3日にかけての釜ケ崎越冬闘争集中期に、調査協力者数名と参与観察ならびに聞き取り調査を行なった。調査結果は調査協力者に報告書として提出させた。それらの報告によって個々の調査対象者の個人誌、生活感等の把握を試みた。同時に個々の調査協力者の地域への参与のありかた、調査対象者との関係を成立させる過程を観察することによって、特殊な地域的性格をもつ社会空間への、異人としての参与の様相、異なった社会集団の構成員同士の関係性のありかたも把握するように努めた。また全国紙の東京版の講読、寄せ場をはじめ社会問題等を主に扱うメーリングリストへの加入、日雇労働者、路上生活者等を支援する人々によるホームベージならびに発行物等に注目することによって最新の動向を把握することに努めた。さらに釜ケ崎日雇労働者、新宿西口に居住する路上生活者らとの親密な関係形成、対面、文通等を重ねることによって、個人としての彼/女らの人生経験等の理解を試みた。またこれらの調査研究においては特に、寄せ場における祭りをはじめとした様々なイベント、路上でのダンボールハウスやテントにおける生活様式、文学あるいは絵画などをはじめとした彼/女らの自己表現などに注目した。そしてこれらの事象をいわば日本における対抗文化の一端に位置づけ、最近の文化研究の潮流にも依拠しつつ、彼らのいういわば「闘い」におけるその意味を探究した。
