千葉県内Kクリニック禁煙支援外来で、禁煙支援カウンセリングを受けた7名の患者によって、2000年2月にParticipatory Researchの一つ手法であるフォーカスグループ法をおこなったところ、「支援内容についてはこのままでよい」といった意見が多かったが、啓蒙、広報活動についてはさらに必要であるといった意見が多かった。また、量的調査として1997年6月から1999年2月までに禁煙支援カウンセリングを受けた患者177名を対象とし、1999年9月上旬に調査票を用いた郵送法調査を実施した結果、(回収率は46.3%、81名であった)。禁煙者(本人および家族が喫煙したと認めた者)が36名(44.4%)、喫煙継続者は45名(55.6%)であり、そのうち準備期は23名(28.4%)、熟考期は14名(17.3%)、前熟考期は8名(9.9%)であった。1998年1月〜1999年2月までの1年2ヶ月の間に禁煙支援外来で受診中の115名では、支援中の間、呼気中一酸化炭素濃度が8ppmになり、禁煙したと認められた者は37名と32.2%であったため、客観的指標はもちいていないものの、長期的にみるとより多くの喫煙者が禁煙を継続していることが明らかになった。喫煙継続者が禁煙に取り組むと仮定したときに、禁煙支援外来のサポートを希望する者は22名(48.9%)であった。平成10年度のK総合病院健康フェア訪れた120名を対象とした調査によって禁煙支援希望の有無では、約半教の者が医師または看護婦による禁煙支援を希望していたが、本調査ではより具体的な支援方法の希望として、「電話での禁煙支援を受けたい」が5名(11.1%)で最も多かった。また、「禁煙成功者から体験談を聞きたい」「禁煙中の人と意見交換する機会を持ちたい」と希望する者もみられた。
