1.私設応援団の参与観察:全国広島東洋カープ私設応援団連盟の関西支部に所属する私設応援団「神戸中央会」の参与観察を実施し、ビジターチームの私設応援団の文化を記述することを試みた。神戸中央会の会員の獲得は、集合的な応援行動という規格化され、他者に容易に転換できる二次的関係に基づく大衆行動がきっかけとなっていた。しかし、彼らの集団的応援行動は、単なる大衆行動ではなく、人々をある独自の意味を持つ世界に没入させる世俗的な儀礼の特徴を有しており、私設応援団のコミュニティを維持する文化的な仕掛けとなっていた。また、この応援団が所属する関西支部や近畿カープ後援会(会員数:約500名)は、大阪に住む広島県出身者の集合的アイデンティティ形成に関与していることが分かった。これらの結果は、2000年3月31日〜4月1日に米国エール大学で開催される国際会議"Sports and Body Culture on Modern Japan"において"The Ethnography of Baseball Fan Clubs"として発表される。2.質問紙調査法による観客調査:1999年6月26日に、グリーンスタジアム神戸で、当日オリックスのホームゲームを見に来ている観客を母集団とするアンケート調査を実施した。サンプリングは層化二段(性・年齢)無作為抽出法を用い、調査対象を自記式調査が可能な男女1,200人とした。回収した有効な質問票は、1,153票であり、有効回収率は96.1%であった。私設応援団員とその他の観客とを比較したところ、応援団員はチームへのロイヤルティが高く、自覚的ファン度の高い人ほど、今季の主催ゲームの相手チーム本拠地開催に対して否定的な回答が多く、今後のフランチャイズ制のあり方が問われるところである。なお、本研究結果の一部は、社団法人関西経済連合会編集の季刊誌(1999年、第59号、29頁)に掲載された。
