本研究は,外国語学習の進行に伴う当該言語の認知処理過程の変化について,特に単語の処理に焦点を当て,日本人英語学習者の習熟度を変数に検討することを目的とするものであった。昨年度は,英単語の処理過程における概念関与の程度と習熟度との関係について,課題遂行において概念関与の程度が異なる2種の課題-単語異同判断課題と文妥当性判断課題-を用いて検討したところ,概念の関与が相対的に強く求められる場合(すなわち,文妥当性判断課題における意味類似条件),英語の習熟度の低い群では処理における負荷が大きくなることが示された。このような習熟度の違いを生じさせている心内辞書の構造的側面について検討するため,本年度は翻訳課題におけるカテゴリー干渉効果(単語リストが同一カテゴリー内のメンバーからなる場合に,概念へのアクセスを必要とする課題で干渉が生じること)を指標として日本人英語学習者を対象とした実験を実施した。心内辞書を語彙記憶と概念記憶に分けると,日本人英語学習者の場合,日本語に比べ英語における語彙記憶と概念記憶とのリンクが弱いため,カテゴリー干渉効果は日本語から英語への翻訳場面でのみみられるのではないかと考えられた。実験の結果,カテゴリー干渉効果は日本語から英語への翻訳時においてやや生じる傾向があったものの,翻訳の方向性(日本語→英語/英語→日本語)による違いは明確には現れなかった。この結果は,今回の被験者群においては翻訳の方向性に関わらず課題遂行時の処理過程において明らかに概念を経由しているとは言えないことを示すが,刺激単語の種類や難易度,被験者の英語習熟度によっても結果の異なることが考えられ,それらの要因を加味したさらなる検討を必要とする。
