本研究では、動詞が古英語散文の語順決定の一要因である可能性について考察した。古英語散文の語順を決定する要因のひとつは動詞であるという仮説を立て、それを文末焦点の原理および文末重点の原理に基づき検証した。両原理によれば、動詞が軽いときには主語の後に、重いときには文末や文頭などの位置に現れると推測される。調査では、状態・非状態動詞の分類を非状態動詞の分析に応用し、非状態動詞を含む節内にも動詞による語順の違いがあるかを調査した。動詞の情報量という考え方を導入した上で、動詞の重さを他動性を用いて表現し、各資料の語順分布状況を分析した。Hopper and Thompson(1980)の他動性の理論を用い、統計処理の結果を参考に総合的に考察した。調査の結果、以下の点が明らかになった。(1)語順決定要因として動詞を調査する目的においては、本論文が採用した方法が先行研究の方法よりも有効である。(2)古英語散文においては動詞によって語順に差がある。その差は状態動詞・非状態動詞間にとどまるものではなく、動詞の重さに関連して非状態動詞内にも連続して存在するものである。(3)資料によって使用される動詞の性質に違いがある。また、動詞の情報量と語順との関係は、特定の分野の資料に限定されるものではなく古英語散文に広く見られる。(4)他動性を構成する構成要素においても語順との関係が認められる。動詞に関する状態・非状態以外の性質も語順に影響を及ぼしている。よって、動詞は古英語散文における語順決定要因のひとつであり、語順の多様性や変化を説明する手がかりとなると言える。
