项目摘要

初年度には、一九世紀イギリスの週刊スポーツ新聞創刊の経緯と急進主義文学との比較を行い、W・コベットの狩猟に関する言説、W・ヘイズリットの著作に焦点をあてた。またスポーツ・ジャーナリスト、ピアス・イーガンの週刊スポーツ新聞と急進主義者との関係については「1820年代のイギリスにおける急進主義的批評家の拳闘観-W・ヘイズリットの拳闘(1822)-」として前年度研究論文にまとめている。スポーツ・ジャーナリズムの形成と急進主義的思考の全般に関する序説的研究も前年度国際学会(6^<th> Congress of ISHPES,in Budapest)で発表を行い、一定の評価を受けた("Sport and Radicals in Pre-Victorian Society of Britain")。平成12年度は急進主義的批評家や急進主義の影響を受けたスポーツ・ジャーナリストがどのような具体的根拠でスポーツ文化論を構築していたのか、「伝統」という観念からの分析につとめた。「伝統」へのこだわりは、保守主義者が擁護した中身にあたるだけでなく、「原理主義」ということを貫いた初期の急進主義者たちの主張にもあてはまるものであった。19世紀前半のスポーツに用意されていた「伝統的スポーツ的感性traditional sporting fancy」は、実は近代スポーツ倫理の構築につながる重要な言語化の中身を有しており、それらの表現を用いてスポーツ・ジャーナリストが肯定的態度を示していたことを国際学会で発表した("Traditional Sporting Fancy Made for Modern Sports Ethics:Corinthian,Paul Pry and Tom ＆ Jerryism",5^<th> Seminar of ISHPES[国際体育スポーツ史学会],in Duderstadt[Germany],2000.6.)。さらに年度の後半には、20世紀転換期や20世紀を迎えてからのスポーツに関する研究分野の独立が、同様に急進主義の影響を受けた労働運動史や、文化史研究とつながりを見せていることから、スポーツ理論に焦点をあてる研究そのものが独立する際のイデオロギーとの関係について興味が及んだ。これは歴史的にスポーツ・ジャーナリズムといったスポーツ論叙述文化が生まれていく経緯を支える哲学的根拠と関係が深いように思われる。平成11、12年度継続して行った科学研究費補助金奨励研究Aとしての課題研究は本年で終了するが、この点の興味を今後の研究の視野に収めて継続させていきたいと考える。
