研究初年度は在日韓国・朝鮮人のエスニシティなどに関する先行研究を調べるとともに、多数の韓国・朝鮮人が集団で居住する大阪のいくつかの地域のフィールドワーク調査によって本テーマの考察を試みた。また、夏には韓国に赴き、本研究で採りあげる韓国の「伝統スポーツ」なるものをより明確にするため、その歴史やスタイル、伝承形態などの集中的な調査を行った。現時点においては在日韓国・朝鮮人社会のおいて、伝統スポーツの伝承形態を把握することが中心となり、それと彼らのアイデンティティとの関わりについて、明確な関連性を提示するには次年度に予定している更なる集中調査が必要である。日本国内において彼らの伝統スポーツが実践される機会は、主として民族系の学校、在日本大韓民国居留民団、在日本朝鮮人総連合会などによって提供されている。しかし、本国で広範囲に行われている綱引きや車戦といった集団スポーツが伝承されていないことは彼らに地理的なコミュニティが欠落していることも一要因だと思われる。ゆえに、伝承されているのは個人レベルで完結するシルムと呼ばれる朝鮮相撲やテコンドーなど、格闘技が多いことが一つの特徴である。女性の板飛びやぶらんこなどが行われることはあるものの、年中行事の域を越えず、日常の娯楽とはなりえていない。テコンドーに関しては韓国式と北朝鮮式の異なる二つのスタイルが共存しているが、それらのスタイルと実践者の国籍に関しては顕著な関連は見られず、むしろ地理的な条件の方が、スタイルの選択に影響を与えているケースが多い。また、朝鮮学校の授業で行われる場合などを除き、両スタイルの実践過程に政治的イデオロギーが持ち込まれることは少ない。
