本研究では、十九世紀初頭の新古典派、ロマン派の芸術家たちを中心に、彼らにとっての芸術的生成の母胎となったアトリエの意義を考察した。それによれば、彼らのアトリエ体験とは、作品および回想記等の文献資料から判断する限り、本質的には他者(師自身を含む)との相互批判を通じた自己形成であることが認められる。すなわち、教育機関としてのアトリエは、すでにダヴイッドのそれ以来、師の模倣を通じた修練の場ではなくなっており、アカデミーないし国立美術学校の保守性として当時攻撃を受けたのは、その美学的主張以上に、師の模倣に基づく一方的な教育観であったと思われるのである。この点は、当初の見通しのとおり、制作システムとしての前近代の工房と、美学的主張を行うための現代的な芸術家集団との過渡期としてのアトリエのあり方を確認することとなった。そして、こうした変化の背景として、独創性の重視という思想的潮流があると考えられるが、それは必ずしも変化の動因とは位置づけられられないように思われた。むしろ同時に、問題を社会的な位相から捉えるならば、十九世紀初期のアトリエは市民社会の生産・労働システムからの疎外状況の表象としてみることができるだろう。たとえば本研究の過程で調査したアトリエ図には、芸術家の貧困を強調したもの(中には無人のアトリエ図もあり、ゴッホの室内情景を予示するものとして興味深い)と、芸術制作を聖化したものとがあるが、これはいずれも成立しつつあった近代的な労働システムと芸術制作との差異化を示すものとみることができる。この間題は、文学における「制作」の表象(バルザック、ゾラについて多くの研究がある)や十九世紀の労働者階級、社会政策の問題との関わりを示している。この点は次の研究課題として、より広い文脈において追究していきたい。
