1 平成14年度に引き続き、英国のパブリック・レコード・オフィスにおいて、Satow Papersを調査し、アストンの生涯の友人であったアーネスト・サトウがアストンに宛てた多数の書簡判読を行った。また、今年度新たに膨大なサトウの日記の判読にもとりかかり、アストンがサトウと長年にわたり日本学をめぐって交流を続けたことはもとより、チェンバレン、ディッキンズといった他の英国人日本学者とのネットワーク的な交流関係が日本アジア協会の内外に存在したととも明らかにした。アストンの日本学関係の著作はサトウを始めとするこのような英国人ネットワークによって支えられていたことが確認された。また、精神的な支えとして、幕末・明治初期に日本に滞在した英国人医師ウイリスの存在も無視できないことを、鹿児島県歴史資料センター黎明館所蔵のウイリス文書によって確認しつつある。2 平成14年度に引き続き、日本アジア協会のアストン存命中の紀要を入手して。アストン執筆の論文およびこれらの彙報に掲載されたアストンの会員としての活動を追求した。3 ケンブリッジ大学図書館所蔵のCatalogue of W.G.Aston's Collection of Japanese Books(『アストン和書目録』)の翻訳を開始し、アストンが膨大な日本の書物を収集しただけではなく、その多くに目を通し、個々の書物の内容を的確に把握していたことが明らかになった。現在、本書の翻訳と注釈を鹿児島大学法文学部紀要『人支学科論集』に「ケンブリッジ大学図書館所蔵『アストン和書目録』翻訳稿」と題して発表する準備を進めている。
