项目摘要

平成14年度はワシントン大学に所蔵されている『北米時事』新聞の川柳欄を閲覧コピーし、川柳をコンピュータに入力、平成15年度は『加州毎日』新聞の川柳欄を閲覧コピーし、川柳を同様に入力した。さらに『ユタ日報』の川柳欄の川柳も収集、コンピュータに入力した。両年とも、日系コミュニティでの人脈を通じて、戦前・戦中の川柳人と接触し、個人所蔵資料の閲覧コピー、面談聞き取りを行った。戦時中ジェローム強制収容所で発行された川柳しがらみ吟社の「しがらみ」、ツールレーク隔離収容所の「怒涛」などを収集した。平成16年度は、戦時中の収容所で発行された文学誌のなかの川柳を入力した。同年では、入力した川柳15000句を分析し、2004年度アメリカ学会(アトランタ)で、戦前の川柳に関する学会発表を行った。この発表で、日本アメリカ学会の英文ジャーナル誌への寄稿を依頼された。また、サバティカルで滞在中のハーバード大学ロングフェロー研究所の教授から、ドイツのアメリカ学会誌への寄稿を依頼された。(現在、入校中、発行は2005年度)。さらに補足的研究のために平成17年3月にシアトルとロサンゼルスで調査を行った。また平成16年6月にはアイダホ州ミネドカ強制収容所跡地を見学した。アメリカの川柳は、いわゆる狂句とは異なり、季語のない俳句ともいえる。川柳人の社会階層は、日本人会幹部から、季節労働者、年齢的には「老人」から10代の若者、性別も男性が多いものの、主婦や未婚女性も交じっている。一つの句は短いが、万単位で残る膨大な量を分析することで、記録を持たないと思われた一般庶民のさまざまな声が聞こえてくる。アメリカ移民の「人生の記録であり、心情の詩」である。
