本研究の目的は、乳幼児を持つ海外在留日本人母親の異文化適応と日本の伝統的お産文化の継承状態を明らかにすることである。特に、母親の内面(認知・欲求・感情)にフォーカスして調査を実施した。英国A市では子育て環境がよく日本と同等の安定した生活が可能であるが、冬場の天候の悪さが問題であると予測された。日本よりも医療サービスやケアが良いと<認知>しているが、<ケアが足りない>のでもう少し手厚いケアを<欲求>しており、異文化での生活上のくつらさ>や<孤独感>を感じていたい。北京では、アイさんと呼ばれる中国人中高年女性の家事・子育ての支援を得てゆとりある子育て環境であったが、空気汚染などの地域環境の悪さや反日感情の問題を<認知>しながらも、今の生活をエンジョイしたいという<欲求>と同時に、<怖い><子どもの帰国後のことが不安>という感情もみられた。文化の違いや問題に直面しながらも、母親たちは日本の伝統的お産文化に安心感と帰属意識を見出していた。1.海外在留日本人母親の日常生活は、主に自文化をそのまま海外でも継承していた。2.日本人母親は海外で日本のお産・子育ての文化を継承することにより、日本の家族や友人と新しい命を承認し、家族や友人からの支援を確固たるものにしていた。3.日本人母親のうち、日本の実家がお産・子育て文化を色濃く継承している場合、海外でも日本の家族の支援を受けて日本のお産・子育て文化を異文化の中でも色濃く継承していた。4.海外という異文化の中で、日本のお産・子育て文化の継承は、日本人母親にとって、日本人としてのアイデンティティを再確認し安心感を得るものであった。5.帰国後、子どもの日本社会への適応を考えた場合、日本の出産・子育て文化の継承は日本人母親にとって必要不可欠なものであった。応用医療人類学は医療サービスに貴重な貢献をすることができる。
