本研究は、昭和10年代に時期を焦点化し、特定の地域と学校の事例研究を通して、社会の音楽もふくめた音楽文化の中に、学校音楽がどのように位置づき、その結果としてどのように国民統合機能を果たしたのかを明らかにすることを目的とする。その目的を達成するために、平成19年度は以下のような研究に取り組んだ。第一に、長野県飯田市の座光寺小学校と上郷小学校の卒業生を中心に、昭和10年代後半に小学校に通っていた方々を対象に、簡単なアンケート調査とインタビュー調査を行った。第二に、長野県伊那市の高遠小学校で、昭和10年代を中心に、高遠小学校と、後に統合した河南小学校の学校日誌をはじめとする学校文書の蒐集を行った。以上の作業によって蒐集した資史料をもとに、飯田市周辺と伊那市高遠町周辺の学校音楽の状況を比較検討した。その結果、以下のようなことが明らかになった。既に前年度の研究によって、尋常小学校期にも、レコードや楽器などの整備が進んでいた学校もあったことを明らかにしたが、アンケート調査とインタビュー調査から、それらを利用した鑑賞や器楽教育については、学校差はもちろん、同じ学校の中でも教員によって差がみられることがわかった。また、レコードや楽器などの整備にあたっては、学校の予算だけでなく、地域住民の寄附によるケースも少なからずみられ、その関係か、地域社会におけるレコード鑑賞会や器楽演奏などに学校が関わることがあったこともわかった。以上から、従来の音楽教育史研究が描いてきた、学校音楽が国民統合の役割を果たしたという議論に対して、学校間/学校内の差異や、地域社会との音楽的な関わりという変数を導入する必要があると考えた方がよいという知見を得た。なお、調査の実施時期が遅くなったため、平成19年度中に成果を発表することはできなかったが、20年度に学会発表等で成果を公表する予定である。
