本研究では、明治期以降の交通網発達による全国の都市間の交流可能性の変遷を、滞在可能時間および積み上げ所要時間といった指標を用いて算出し、それが都市の消長を表す人口等の指標の変化とどのように関連しているかを分析することによって、交通の整備と国土構造の変化との関連を明らかにした。研究実績の概要は以下の通りである。1.対象年次、対象都市の設定:明治の初期から現在までのうち、交通整備の変革期を考慮して、概ね10年間隔で、10数時点を対象年次として抽出した。また対象都市としては47都道府県庁所在都市とした。2.時刻表データの入力:対象年次の鉄道・バス・船・航空機等の全便のダイヤをデータベースとして入力した。3.滞在可能時間等の計算:計算機を用いて指標の算出を行い、47都市相互間の滞在可能時間を、1.で示した10数時点において求めた表を作成した。「最短所要時間」と「平均積み上げ所要時間」の2指標値を比較することにより、都市間交通の運行頻度による交通利便性と到達時間によるそれとを分離しての考察が可能となった。4.交通可能性指標の計測:アクセシビリティの考え方を用いて、各都市の相対的な位置関係を指標化した。5.都市・地域データとの関連の分析:各都市の交流可能性指標と、その都市や地域の活動水準を表す人口等のデータを経年的に比較分析した結果、地理的条件や人口規模等に大差ない地域では、交通面で有利にある地域、しかも整備時期が早い地域ほど、人口増加のポテンシャルが高くなること等を明らかにした。6.総合的な考察:交通が地域に与える影響は、間接的ではあるが極めて大きいという事実が明らかになり、ここから、都市間交通の整備は採算性以外の観点からも論じる必要があることを指摘できた。
