本研究の目的は、従来ばらばらの関心から進められてきた歴史的研究のいくつかを結び付けて、分析哲学草創期の議論の様態を解明するための新しい視点を提供することである。具体的には、ラッセル、ムーアやウィトゲンシュタインら、ケンブリッジの新実在論における議論の構成を解明することを目標にした。その際、彼らの批判と論争の対手となった、マイノングの対象理論に代表されるグラーツ学派と、ブラッドリーの絶対観念論に代表される英国ヘーゲル主義という、二つの学派に焦点を絞り、ケンブリッジの分析哲学の成立に当たって、その二つの学派に対してどのような論陣が張られたのかを歴史的に解明するとともに、それら二方向の議論が共有している議論の構造を概念的・論理的に究明して、新実在論の基本的な問題構成を明らかにしようとした。最終年度は、ブラッドリーの絶対観念論の論理思想と、それに対するムーアやラッセルの批判を検討し、前年度の成果をも念頭に置きながら、おもにラッセルの単称名辞の理論と関数論との関連について吟味した。ブラッドリー研究に関しては、Anthony Manser,Bradley's Logic,1983,Blackwell、W.J.Mander,An Introduction to Bradley's Metaphysics,1994,Oxford U.P.、Guy Stock(ed.),Appearance versus Reality : New Essays on the Philosophy of F.H.Bradley,1998,Oxford U.P.等を参照した。初期ラッセルの単称名辞論が、ブラッドリーの単称名辞論との批判的対決をへて形成されたものであり、独立変数と従属変数という伝統的な枠組みをふまえた関数論の枠組みのうちに位置づけられたものであることを明らかにした。
