近年急速な展開を見せているラッセル研究に対応するため、関連文献の収集に努めた。第一次資料となるラッセル自身の著作については、現在刊行中のRoutledge版の論文全集を中心に、新たに出版される遺稿集や書簡集、既刊書の新訂版を極力網羅的に収集した。参考文献となる研究書・雑誌論文については、ラッセル研究に実績のある研究者の仕事を系統的に追うことができるようにすることを優先して収集した。平成6年度には、ラッセルの論文全集の第4巻が刊行され、1903年から1905年にかけてのラッセルの草稿が手軽に読めるようになった。いわゆる記述理論成立の事情等をめぐって、活発な議論が始まることが予想される。こうした状況をうけて、具体的な研究としては、ラッセルの残したテクストの厳密な研究を前提に、N.Cocchiarellaによるタイプ理論を中心とした初期ラッセル研究、P.Hyltonによる英国観念論を視野に入れた初期ラッセル研究、F.A.Rodriguez-Consuegraによる初期ラッセルの数学・論理学の哲学の研究、I.Grattan-Guinessによる集合論成立史をふまえた初期ラッセル哲学研究を系統的に整理し、それらの成果を基礎に、初期ラッセルの命題論と命題関数論を再構成し、それがラッセル哲学においてどのような位置を占めているか、また、現代の哲学的問題にどのような関わりを有するかを検討した。とりわけ、記述理論と命題関数との関わりについて、その成立にさかのぼって研究する手掛かりが、先に触れた全集第4巻の刊行とあいまって手に入れられた。
