We measured the number of platelet Ca pump receptor, urinary Ca excretion, corrected plasma Ca, and the number of erythrocyte Na pump receptor in 27 hypertensive or normotensive children, and obtained the following results.1) Decreased number of Ca pump receptor was strongly related to the family history of hypertension.2) The numbers of both Ca and Na pump receptors, and corrected plasma Ca were lower in hypertensives than in normotensives, although they were not statistically significant.3) Platelet Ca concentration was negatively correlated with the number of Ca pump receptor. In addition, these factors were measured before and after oral Ca administration (600 mg/day, one to three months) in six children who had very low number of Ca pump receptor, and who wanted to be examined. The following results were obtained.1) The number of Na pump receptor, corrected plasma Ca and urinary Ca excretion were increased, although they were not statistically significant.2) The number of Ca pump receptor, platelet Ca concentration and blood pressure did not change. These findings suggest that intra-and extracellular Ca metabolism may have a significant role in regulating blood pressure in children, and that oral Ca supply may be useful to improve the disturbance of membrane Na pump which is related to the development of essential hypertension in adults.
