Search for neurotrophic substances in natural products resulted in the discovery of several new following compounds ; eudesobovatol A,eudeshonokiol B,clovanemagnolol, and caryolanemagnolol from Magnolia obovata, mastiogophorenes A and B from Mastigophora diclados, americanol A and isoamericanol A from Phytolacca americana, garciniaxanthone A from Garcinia subelliptica, illicinone E and tricycloillicinone from Illicium tashiroi.These compounds enhanced not only neurtite outgrowth but also ChAT activity in primary cultured neuron of fetal rat cerebral hemispherer at 10^<-5> - 10^<-7> M.Several new 1,4-benzoquinone derivatives named belamcandaquione, and ardisiaquinones A,D,E,and F were found as potent 5-lipoxygenase inhibitors from Belamcanda chinensis and Ardisia sieboldii, respectively.All of them were practically synthesized from the common intermediate, which was coupled via an acetylene unit.
