研究目的・課題、研究計画にしたがって、(1)放送大学「現代住居論」受講生への郵送法によるアンケート調査、(2)同受講生の「体験記述」のデータ化・分析、(3)若年層としての八戸工業大学学生へのアンケート調査(建築工学科およびエネルギー工学科)、(4)同じく世帯を持ったばかりの若年層へのアンケート調査(結婚後2年以内の人、結婚式場を通して調査)、(5)八戸市老人大学受講生へのアンケート調査、(6)設計者・建設業者へのヒアリング調査を行った。この結果、次の知見が得られた。(1)住意識生活様式には子育て、新婚など世代のおかれた家庭環境を強く反映している部分がある。(2)住意識の変容は仮説で示したほど大きくはなく、住意識の継承は予想以上に大きい。(3)(1),(2)は、30代と40代の意識、また20代と50代(20代の親の世代にあたる)の意識がよく似ていること、40代は30代よりも高学年の子供対応の意識であることなどから知られた。(4)とはいえ、世代・時代差とみられる住意識の違いがある。若い世代ほど、住居での生活よりも住居外での生活を楽しみとし、家族イベントや接客(同級生や仲間内の接客)に楽しみを見出す傾向が強い。住生活ではプライバシー意識が高く、多目的な公室の要求、自己顕示的な形態・意匠への志向(個性化志向)が見られた。(5)このような変容を伝統的住生活・住居からの乖離として理解しようとしたが、50・60代ではそのように理解できても、20・30代の意識はかなり異なっている。親世代の影響を受けつつも、新しい段階に入ったとみることができる。(6)体験記述では育った時代の思潮を思わせる記述がいくつも見られたが、それが現代の住意識や生活様式に反映していると思われるような部分は発見できなかった。この意味での経験効果は仮説ほど大きくはなかった。(7)建設者による対象階層の違いは見られたが、彼らがユーザーの住意識の変容にどれほどの影響力をもっているかということはよくわからなかった。
