项目摘要

本研究は、仏教やジャイナ教が興起するに当たって、その共通基盤となったであろう遍歴の修行者、すなわち「沙門」(sramana/samana)の実態とその特性を、最古層の仏教文献とジャイナ教文献を基礎資料として、解明することを目的として遂行した。まず、仏教文献として『スッタニパータ』(経集)、『ダンマパダ』(法句経)を、ジャイナ教文献として、『アーヤーランガ・スッタ』、『スーヤガダンガ・スッタ』、『ウッタラッジャーヤー』、『ダサヴェーヤーリヤ・スッタ』を中心に、これら最古層と見做される聖典に見出される並行詩脚(parallel pada)を収集した。次に、これら並行詩脚の内容的特色を体系的に分類した。ここに分類された定形句的表現は以下の事柄を提示していることを知り得た。修行の目的として、苦から解放されることを目指しており、ここでいう苦とは死のことであって、死から逃れ、涅槃に到達することであった。この目的達成のために実践道として、種々の規定を設けていた。例えば、生活の場所として人里離れた辺鄙な所に住み、生命を維持するために一人で遊行し、乞食して施与された最小限の食事をした。そして一切を所有せず、愛欲や貧欲等の根絶に努め、占相や医学的治療は許されていなかった。本研究において収集した並行詩脚は、先学の研究成果を基盤としているが、さらに精査すればもう少し発見できる可能性があるように思われる。この目的達成のため、コンピュータを利用して、聖典の詩脚索引(pada Index)の作成を試み、将来の発展につながる成果を得た。
