近世文学関係資料の解題は、例えば西鶴本とか馬琴読本等を例外として、多くの成果を見てはいない。対象が広範囲にわたること、関連分野が多様であることなどが、大きな理由であろう。今回、その解題目録を開発する研究に研究材料として用いた、実践女子大学図書館の旧近世文学研究室本は、授業時に使用し、雑な扱いを受けるとの想定のもとに集められた、いわゆる雑本の集積であって、各種の問題点を提供してくれた。その概略を示せば、第一に、雑本であり、無名な作であるからこそ、解題が必要である、ということである。大量かつ多種にわたる作品は、近世文学研究の専門家といえども実物に接する機会を得ることが少なく、熟知の範囲外であることは珍しくない。第二に、それゆえ、書誌解題の記述に終わるべからざること、である。従来の近世文学資料の目録は、書誌事項の略述で済まされることが多かった。識者よろしく賢察せよ、との態度である。しかし、第一に述べた理由、および、専門分化の進行に伴い、それでは目録の役目を果しにくいのが現状である。第三に、図影が長文の解説に優ること、である。とくに版本において問題になる改竄の実体、求版・覆刻の別など、一目瞭然であろう。本研究に基づき、次に行うべきは、調査の書誌カードを利用しての、目録化であろう。当該目録にあっては、書誌解題に作品解題を併せることが基本にしなる。ただし、いわゆる雑本にくだくだしい記述は、なじまない。参考文献の提出、あるいは『国書総目録』『古典文学辞典』等の参照ページを添えることによって、代替することが可能になろう。そして、これは図書館当局との交渉を必要とすることがらであるが、その公刊を期すことにしたい。ここに、あえて付言したいことがある。それは、調査の補助に携わった学生が、この集書に新鮮な感動を示したことである。近世文化の遺産が次代に継承される手ごたえを感じえたことは、望外の喜びであった。
