本研究は、米国中西部小都市とその近郊農村部におけるヨーロッパ系白人(主に、アングロ・サクソン、ポーランド、スカンディナビア系)の調査で収集した民族誌的資料に歴史的資料を加え、分析することによって19世紀末から現在にいたるまでの家族農場の継承を中心とした老後の扶養と世代間関係の変遷を明らかにすることを目的としている。当該研究期間には、1.12家族のインタビュー資料を分析し、歴史的資料を補足して家族史の再構成を行った。(1)カセット・テープに録音されている12家族のインタビュー資料を文書化し、項目毎にデーターベース化し、コンピューターに入力した。(2)家族史再構成のための補足資料として、マイクロフィルムに収録されている当該地域の墓石名記録を入手し、分析した。2.土地台帳、農地の登記簿を使用して、当該家族の農地の譲渡と老後の扶養の関係を分析した。3.2.の結果を1.の家族史の中に位置づけ、当該家族における世代間関係と老後の扶養の意味を分析した。現時点の分析段階では、次の事柄が明らかになった。1.農地の譲渡に関しては、長子相続、末子相続といった明確な原則があるというよりは、親が最も適切な後継者を「選択」したとされる場合が多い。2.農地の譲渡には親の老後の扶養が条件として含まれる場合が多いが、扶養の内容、及び継承者との家族関係には民族集団間で多様性がみられる。男性高齢者と女性高齢者では扶養関係に違いがみられる。このように、民族集団による多様性の把握が今後の課題とされるが、当該地域への移住の時期および、農地取得・拡大の時期は民族集団間で異なり、研究対象地域全体の民族集団間関係の変化を把握することが必要である。

This study was conducted in small cities and suburban rural areas in the Midwest of the United States. The survey (Main, Angro·Sukasun, Poarande, Sukandea) collected ethnographic data and historical data for analysis, with the goal of clarifying the transition between the family farm and the present, the support center for the elderly, and the relationship between generations from the end of the 19th century onwards. During the study period, 1.12 family history data were analyzed, and the family history data were supplemented.
