Following points were studied using our venous hypertensive rats. 1) The mechanism of induced AVF by venous hypertension ; The appearance of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) was examined by immunohistochemical technique for human dural sinus of dural AVF patients (Acta Neurochirurgica 1996 in press) and rat dural sinus of induced venous hypertension. bFGF was found in the sinus wall in human and rat dural sinus. This angiogenic factor may related to the development of dural AVF.2) The factor to modulate the development of dural AVF (estrogen) ; Estrogen is known to relate the development of human dural AVF.We examined the effect of estrogen for the development of rat dural AVFs. Induced venous hypertension rats with or without estrogen were compared at the rate of developing AVF.Any statistical significant difference was not revealed by this experiment. Therefore, we concluded estrogen itself did not affect the development of dural AVF.3) Anatomical study for the development of dural AVF ; Scanning electron microscopic study for the three dimensional angioarchitecture was studied for venous hypertension rat. Mercox (polymer) was injected into the rat venous sinus, but dessection of the rat venous sinus was too small to take out without injury. This study was abandoned.
