C3 examines the combined effect of convection, radiation, contact heat transfer and particle motion on drying of thermally thick particles. In hearth furnaces particles are located on a disc. The particles enter the hearth at the periphery of the disc and are then transported by rabble arms to an outlet in the centre of the disc. Heat will be provided by convection (overflow, throughflow), radiation (electrical radiant heater) and contact (electrically heated disc). Experiments will start with spherical particles made of silica gel with isotropic properties. The wetted particles, which are doped with a humidity sensitive colour-indicator, are recorded with a video and an infrared camera. C3 will deliver unique data sets which allow to verify particle mechanics, heat transfer and drying in the context of DEM/CFD simulations.
