本研究は最近社会問題となっている高齢者の誤嚥の問題を解決するために計画された基礎研究である。我々は経鼻的電極設置方法を考案し、咽頭領域への電気刺激で再現性のある嚥下誘発方法を開発した。このヒト嚥下誘発システムも用い、意識の覚醒度と嚥下誘発効果の関連を調べた。その結果、嚥下誘発嚥下障害者のリハビリや、食事介助を行うにあたり、患者の覚醒度を高めることが誤嚥防止に有効かつ不可欠であることが示唆された。
