本研究課題では、アメリカの有権者が民主党・共和党支持者の社会的な属性や争点態度について持っているイメージ (ステレオタイプ) が感情的分極化に与える影響の実証的解明を目指している。まず、その前提として、民主党及び共和党支持者の間でどの程度社会的な属性や争点態度が体系的に異なっているかを、American National Election StudyやYouth-Parent Socialization Surveyといった既存の世論調査の二次分析を通じて検討した。また、2022年12月にアメリカの有権者を対象としたオンライン世論調査を実施し、彼らが民主党・共和党それぞれについて持つステレオタイプの測定を行った。その結果、なかでも各政党の支持者の社会属性に関するイメージは、多くの回答者が民主党支持者におけるマイノリティの割合を高く見積もるなど、実態を反映しているとは言い難いことがわかった。加えて、こうした各政党の支持者についてのイメージを操作・修正するサーベイ実験も行い、特に人種や宗教といった社会的な属性に関するステレオタイプを修正することにより、感情的分極化をある程度低減させることができることを明らかにした。2023年度はこれらの結果を論文にまとめ、学会報告・論文の投稿を行う。加えて、2022年度に実施したものを拡張したサーベイ実験を行い、民主党・共和党支持者についてのステレオタイプが政治的無関心や民主主義への態度といった、感情的分極化と関連のある変数に与える影響についても検討を加える。
