The purpose of this study is to develop a multi-functional system whose operation is based on the WEDM(Wire Electrical Discharge Machining)method. Since wires have long feeding paths that can be readily available for machining, the wire characteristics can be manipulated by surface treatment on the path. Therefore, the requirement to develop a multi-functional system using a wire with additional properties so that, better surface finishes in WEDM can be achieved. In this study, the basic machining method is WEDM as already mentioned. Grinding and surface treatment by EDM are additional functions that make the system multi-functional. The following procedure was followed :Firstly, for surface modification of the WED-machined surface, a wire coated with slurry containing titanium carbide powder suspended in glycerol, was used, to avoid mixing in hydrocarbon oil. Using this coated wire for surface modification by EDM, carbon steel surface, titanium carbide modified, was obtained on the same machine set-up. Using this process, carbon steel surface can be hardened over 1500 vickers hardness with 5 μm thickness modified layer.Secondary, for grinding the WED-machined surface, the wire is surface-treated by accretion EDM with titanium green compact in hydrocarbon oil so that, titanium carbide is accreted on the surface. A system was developed for grinding a rotating workpiece with the accreted wire. Using this wire for grinding carbon steel, a depth of cut of 15 μm and surface roughness of 0.7 μmR_a and 6 μmR_z were obtained.It was therefore possible, to use different machining methods with treated wire to machine WED-machined surfaces. Hence, the conclusion that this system can be applied to machining ; and precision elements such as gears, dies, and molds can be easily produced on this system.
