1.The purpose of the present study was to systematize the non-invasive evaluation of atherosclerosis in clinical laboratory medicine. We establishied the normal ranges of several evaluations and compared these values amang several atherosclerotic diseases.2.We determined high-sensitive C reactive protein(CRP) and IgG antibodies to Helicobacter pylori, Chlamydia pneumoniae and cytomegalovirus. We measured endothelium-dependent and-independent vasodilations in brachial artery and the intima-media thickness in common carotid artery by high frequency ultrasonographic imagings. Pulse wave velocity was obtained by automatic device. Measurements were performed in healthy subjects (normal group), patients with hypertension, diabetes or hyperlipidemia (mild atherosclerotic group) and patients with overt cardiovascular diseases (severe atherosclerotic group).3.Flow-mediated vasodilation was decreased in patients with mild or severe atherosclerosis. Endothelium-independent vasodilation was similar in the three groups and negatively correlated with age. Pulse wave velocity and carotid intima-media thickness were increased in patients with mild-and severe atherosclerosis. Thus, atherosclerosis risk factors are associated with endothelial dysfunction and thickness and stiffuess of arteries.4.CRP was increased in patients with severe atherosclerosis in comparison with healthy subjects. IgG antibodies to three pathogens were similar in the three groups. CRP was increased and flow-mediated vasodilation was athenuated in subjects seropositive to Helicobacter pylori.5.Index of endothelial function, vascular function, platelet function and serum CRP have been reproducible in our study period.6.In conclusion, atherosclerosis can be evaluated by non-invasive evaluations of vascular function and structure and systemic inflammatory responses.
