This research survey is planned to be a part of research surveys on Asian native livestock. The Kingdom of Bhutan is situated on the southern slopes of the Eastern Himalayas. It is a land locked between China in the north and India to the east, south and west. Its physical features are characterized by high, rugged mountains and an intricate network of deep valleys and rejected an invader from neighboring countries. As a results of preliminary survey at July of 2003, it was confirmed that an abundance of genetic resources of native livestocks and its related wild species are ranged through the mountains and border areas.First research survey : June 15-30,2004. Participant : Y.Yamamoto, K.Nomura, M.Nishibori, T.Yamagata, Y.Takahashi, M.Kurachi and two Bhutanese scientists1)Survey areas : middle and southern part of Bhutan (Bumthang, Zhemgang, Sarpan, and Phunakha)2)No.of surveyed animals : cattle:23、water buffalo:18、goat:24、chicken:40、mithan:3、junglefowl:0、suncus:8Second research survey … More : August 2-30,2004. Participant : Y.Yamamoto, T.Namikawa, K.Tsunoda, K.Tanaka, K.Kinoshita, M.Kurachi, Y.Miyazaki and two Bhutanese scientists.1)Survey areas : east and west part of Bhutan (Haa, Paro, Chhukha, Trashigang, Lhuentse, Mongar)2)No.of surveyed animals : cattle:81、water buffalo:6、horse:44,sheep:76、goat:0、pig:29、chicken:64、mithan:11、junglefowl:0、suncus:21No.of morphological recorded animals except above mentioned : cattle:1534、water buffalo:36、horse:471、sheep:145、goat:203、pig:45、mithan:16、chicken:487、dog:187、cat:1483)Survey and/or analysis items : record for coat and feather color, body measurement, electrophoresis for blood proteins, blood group typing, DNA extraction for even-toed ungulates, collection for egg albumen.{Results for survey and analysis}All scheduled survey except junglefowl was successfully finished. Gene frequencies for each species were estimated from the results for morphological traits, blood groups, protein polymorphisims. DNA analysis are still continueing at each laboratory in Japan. Less
