Flow cytometric analyzes and sorting processes (a.k.a. FACS sorting) are among the key methods of many life sciences and are also gaining momentum in the field of microbiology. The simultaneous use of several fluorescent dyes and fluorescent proteins allows a detailed characterization of individual microbial cells and the proposed FACS sorter sets the foundation for such experiments. The University of Jena has become a center for microbial research in Germany, however, there is currently no flow cytometer available that allows the analysis and isolation of individual microbial cells. This proposal aims to close this gap. The proposed FACS sorter will offer flow cytometric analyzes and sorting technology to several laboratories at the University, which will enable future pioneering research in the field of microbiology and provide a corner stone for new collaborations. Furthermore, the configuration with 5 lasers listed here allows for a wide range of applications, which reflects the diversity of microbial research at the Jena site. The containment of the machine in a safety workbench further enables the investigation of pathogenic microorganisms. The requested device will thus expand existing research approaches, enable new project, and contribute to the qualification of young scientists.
