The New Computer-Aided Qualitative Data Analysis System in Social Research

本研究的目的是展示一种新的计算机辅助编码程序，用于分析各种类型的定性数据，并对一些定量数据进行多变量分析。其编码方法如下：(1)根据访谈时间或开放式问卷调查的每个样本等，以ASCII格式输入成绩单；(2)计算机程序将成绩单分解成赋予代码的单词；(3)通过时间和代码或样本和代码两个变量的交叉表，将代码整合为几个有意义的类别；(4)用交叉表绘制等值线图有助于把握数据中类别的重要性及其关系；(5)在计算机编码分析中，对文本中没有重要类别的部分采用定性描述作为补充。我们在用户界面上编制了两个优秀的计算机程序来完成这一过程和手册的使用。我们讨论了定性数据分析的理论是如何与这一编码过程相关联的，得出结论：扎根理论和叙事法在分析和解释这些数据时非常有用。我们收集了1990年《S》杂志的数据、杂志20年的目录和1,200多份开放式问题的回复数据：为了分析这些数据，我们制作了频率表，生成了交叉表，绘制了等高线图，并进行了包括聚类分析和对应分析在内的多元分析。这些都是史无前例的分析。各种定性数据的计算机程序手册、理论支持的编码程序和使用计算机编码进行分析的实例作为研究报告打印出来

The purpose of this research is to show the new computer-aided coding procedure to analyze various type of qualitative data and to perform multi-variate analyses for some quaitative data.The coding method is as follows (1)transcripts are input in ASCII format in several groups according to the time of interview or each sample of open-ended questionnnaire research and so on ; (2)the computer program disaggregates the transcripts into words to which codes are assigned (3)the codes are integrated into several meaningful categories by the cross-tabulation of two variables, time and code or sample and code; (4)a contour map made from the cross-table helps to grasp the significance of the categories and their relations in data ; and (5)qualitative description is used as a supplement for the portions of text which have no important categories in computer coding analysis. We have made two computer programs excellent in the user interface to accomplish this procedure and the manual in which usage is described.We discussed how theories in qualitatve data alanysis related to this coding procedure and concluded that Grounded theory and Narrative approach were very useful in analyzing and interpreting these data.We collected the data of newspapers in 1990's, the tables of contents in magazine for 20 years and more than 1,200 respondenses by open-ended questions: To analyzed these data, we make frequency tables, generate cross tabulations, make contour maps and perform multivariate analyses including cluster analysis and corresponding analysis. These are unprecedented analysis.The manual of computer program, the theory supported coding procedures and examples of analysis using computer coding applied for various qualitative data are printed as a research report
