本研究課題の目的は、ボーダレス化が進んだ世界においていくつかの国境・境界地域では隣国の学校に毎日越境して通学する児童の存在について、境界研究（ボーダースタディーズ）の分析法を用いて、①越境通学児童の事象が生じる背景や要因を国境・境界の透過性の変動の観点から解明すること、②越境通学と国民形成とがどのような関係になるかを解明すること、③越境通学児童の比較教育実践を調査対象とする4地域で比較するメタ比較に取り組み、越境通学児童に係る理論的分析枠組みを構築することである。本研究課題を推進するために、第1年度にあたる2022年度は、研究代表者の他に研究分担者6名、研究協力者9名の協力を得て実施した。採択の結果を受けて、研究活動に確実に着手するため、研究期間前の2022年3月に研究代表者・研究分担者によるオンライン会議を実施した。また、2023年2月には、研究協力者を加えて第1回打合せ会議を東北大学において実施し、研究計画および成果の共有・集約を図った。その結果を踏まえて、越境通学児童に関連する特集を『境界研究』誌の特集として公表した。当初計画では、コロナ禍で海外における現地調査が困難であることを踏まえて、現在までの研究成果を研究メンバー間で共有し、次年度以降の調査のための準備をする計画であったが、渡航制限の緩和により、次年度に計画していた現地調査の一部を実施できた。実施できた地域は、アメリカ・メキシコ国境、タイ・ミャンマー国境のタイ側、タイ・カンボジア国境のタイ側である。いずれも、コロナ禍により国境の透過性が低くなり、オンラインなどの遠隔授業により対応されていることが確認された。ただし、渡航や現地での活動には制約が大きく、次年度調査に向けて予備的調査の段階に留まらざるを得なかった。
