人間の認知システムの活動のうち、知識、概念、理解をとりあげてこれらの心理過程に含まれる感性処理的な要素を認知心理学の方法で特定し、ひいては認知システムの構成についても伝統的な見解とは異なった。感性処理主導型のモデルを提案することを試みた。研究対象として、複雑で多層的な構造をもった日常的自然概念の認知過程を代表する、映画・TVドラマの理解過程、広告・TVコマーシャルの評価過程、職業概念・性格概念の形成過程を選び、発語思考プロトコル分析の方法で実験的分析をおこなった。1)映画の理解過程:映画の内容を文章化した物語も対照刺激として用い、メディアの相違が認知過程におけるどのような異なりをもたらすかを比較することも試みた。主な結果として、a)映画の認知は多様な知識源にもとづく推論が並列的に進行するが、物語理解では逐次的な構造形成がめだつこと、b)どちらのメディアにあってもエピソードの進行にともなって、メタ的解釈→評価・感情という推論内容の遷移がみられること、などが得られた。2)広告・TVコマーシャルの評価過程:内容の理解だけでなく広告対象物および広告自体の評価を自然に喚起するという意味で、感性的認知の研究において意義がある。評価課題を3人の合議でおこなうという共同評価条件も設定し、共同的認知における感性過程の様相を観察することを試みた。a)共同評価は、評価という認知過程に併存する知識と推論の種類を増加させるという傾向があること、b)共同評価課題においては、うながし、説得、記憶援助などの機能をもった発話の交換によって、評価の変容がうながされていること、などの結果が得られた。これらの実験的知見に基づき、事例ベース・アーキテクチュアをもつ感性処理モデルの設計について考察をおこなった。
