Apple (Malus×domestica) cultivar 'Fuji' has a distinguished storage capability, whereas its early harvest sport of 'Fuji', 'Hirosaki Fuji', dose not show such competence. Understanding the mechanism of the difference of storage capability between 'Fuji' and 'Hirosaki Fuji' will be very important clue to unravel the mechanism of long shelf life of 'Fuji'. Its achievement may lead to obtain a molecular marker of the selection for long shelf life in apple breeding program.'Hirosaki Fuji' is an early sport discovered at a farm at Hirosaki city in 1984 and it matures a full six weeks ahead of conventional 'Fuji'. Interestingly, the firmness of 'Hirosaki Fuji' fruit lost more rapidly than that of 'Fuji'. To know what caused the difference between 'Fuji' and 'Hirosaki Fuji' is interesting and meaningful. So I investigated the difference between 'Fuji' and its other sport cultivars in addition to 'Hirosaki Fuji'. Through the analysis of the expression of ripening related genes, it was revealed that almost all of ripening related genes including MdERF2 were expressed differently between 'Fuji' and its sport cultivars.
