研究計画調書に記載した計画のとおり、以下のような作業をおこなった。1.文献研究:DISASTER RESEARCH GROUP(主として精神医学者)の研究報告、臨床心理学的研究、看護学の立場からの研究報告、いわゆるDeath Education 研究の文献などを収集し、近親者の突然の死に際して生ずる悲嘆の構造とその変化のプロセスに関する知見を整理した。2.被災者の遺族の面接調査:当初の予定どおり、1983年の日本海中部地震で家族を失った秋田県能代市の16遺族を対象として詳細面接調査を実施した。調査項目は上記文献研究を基にして選んだ。調査には能代市在住の元公立学校長2名が協力し、研究代表者、研究分担者、研究協力者の面接すべてに同席して補助した。16対象のうち、期間内に連絡不能であったもの、時間的に都合がつかなかったもの、いまでもつらいので調査に応じたくないといって拒否したものを除き10名の遺族の調査ができた。3.行政およびマスコミ関係者に対するヒアリング:当時遺族に密接に接触して状況をよく把握していたと推測される行政の担当者と新聞、放送関係者計5名に面接し、遺族が周囲に対してどのように反応したか、周囲のひとびとはどのような配慮をすべきかなどについて意見を求めた。このような調査によって、たとえば、災害直後の近隣のひとびとの慰めの力は予想以上に強いこと、葬儀後の友人との接触や定期的な僧侶の訪問が役に立つこと、「故人の友人」の訪問は時によっては遺族に喜ばれないかもしれないこと、合同の慰霊祭のような儀式も有効であること、マスコミが(他の被災者とくらべて)どのように報道しているかも遺族にとっては重要な意味を持つかもしれないこと、などいくつかの仮説が得られた。
