中部日本ー北海道における最終氷期の自然環境を復元するために、野外調査および従来の研究成果の整理、再検討を行った。野外調査:北海道の十勝平野および天北原野において、とくに永久凍土に関連して形成される化石周氷河現象、とりわけアイスウェッジ状の構造の記載、土壌微細形態分析試料の採集を行った。また、根釧原野のアイスウェッジ状構造との比較検討を行った。主要な成果は以下の通りである。1)天北原野のオホ-ツク海岸側にはアイスウェッジ状構造がかなり広く分布する。形態の特徴からはアイスウェッジ起源にみえるが、その場合当時の活動層の厚さは30ー50cmと不自然に薄い。またウェッジ間はせいぜい4ー5mである。これらの特徴はむしろウェッジがソイルウェッジ起源である可能性を強く示唆している。ソイルウェッジならば、永久凍土面はウェッジの下端あたりの層準にあったことになり、活動層の厚さは約2mと復元することが可能である。2)これらの現象は1例を除いてすべて最終間氷期以前の海岸段丘堆積物中にみられる。この事実は最終氷期以前により寒冷な氷期があったことを意味する。3)根釧原野にも同様の現象が分布するが、形態、規模ともに異なる。4)これらのウェッジ構造のほとんどすべてが段丘礫層中に発達する。5)十勝平野ではアイスウェッジ状構造はほとんどみられない。6)以上のアイスウェッジ状構造がアイスウェッジ起源であるか否かは別にして、熱的収縮による現象であることは確かである。この現象の分布の地域性にもとずいて氷期の北海道の気候の地域性、日本海北部の結氷問題、海退ー陸化の影響を議論できるかもしれない。今後の課題である。
