自然災害時の広域避難や建築物からの避難においては、大量の避難者が発生し、群衆避難となり、その結果、群衆状況に起因する二次災害発生の危険性が高くなる。実際、大正12年の関東大震災では、隅田川に架かる端の上で、両方向から押し寄せてきた群衆が鉢合わせし、河にバラバラと避難民が落下した、と言われている。本研究では、一定の空間に集合・流動する特定多数の人間、すなわち群衆が、危機的場所において示す巨視的行動パターンの発生メカニズムを解明するために、(1)巨視的行動パターンの計量方法の開発、および、(2)巨視的行動パターンの形成につながる微視的相互作用の検討、を行った。群衆状況の中におかれた個人は、多くの場合、自らの近傍に関する情報処理と近傍にいる他者との相互作用を行うのみであるが、群衆を全体としてみると、次第に、一つの巨視的行動パターンが形成され、その巨視的行動パターンが個々人の微視的情報処理や相互作用を規定するようになる。本研究では、大規模な横断歩道や駅のコンコースなどにおける群衆の巨視的行動パターンのうち、群衆流の帯化現象(群衆流の中にいくつかの人流の帯が自然発生的に形成され、ほとんどの人は、その帯の一つの上を歩行する現象)に着目し、その形成度を計量した。いくつかの計量方法を公安し、比較検討した結果、視察の結果をよく反映する計量方法を開発することができた。また、帯化現象の発生は、初期的段階において、少人数による特定の相互作用パターンが発生するか否かによって規定されることが見出された。この少人数による特定の相互作用パターンについては、観察フィールドを模した実験を行い、その発生過程と、群衆全体への波及過程を詳細に検討した。
