約1500名の研究者が, 15年間, 自然災害軽減のため行った研究の総まとめを, 編集, 出版するための打ち合わせを数回行い, その段どりを定めた. その結果, 来年度, 総括シンポジウムを今夏行い, 来年度末に総まとめを印刷出版することにした. また, 3年間の継続の計画研究で61年度で終了したものが4件あり, その報告書の印刷, 配布もほとんど終了した.総まとめの内容としては, 以下のようにすることが定まった. まず, わが国の自然災害を分類し, その変遷を述べ, それに対する研究体制をとりまとめて, 大学における自然災害研究を, 他機関の研究所における研究と対比しながらとりまとめる. 次に, この研究グループの組織と研究体制の推移をわかり易く述べる. 特に当初の研究体制から, さらに企画された事項, たとえば人文社会分野, 海外の突発災害調査の推進, 資料センターシステム, 欧米論文集, 学術会議との共催によるワークショップなどを始め, チェックアンドレビューなどもとりまとめる. また, 経費とこれによって行った研究成果刊行物の推移も図表によって示す. この枠組みは, 昭和63年度7月11日に京都で行われる総括シンポジウムでつめる予定である. 更に, 刊行物リストを末尾にのせて, この総括報告書を見れば, 昭和47年〜62年にわたる自然災害科学研究は総てわかるようにしたい. 次に, 災害種類別の研究成果として, 気象, 雪氷, 強風, 海岸, 洪水, 地盤, 地震, 火山等12分類の災害に関する成果をまとめる. また, 地区別にも北海道, 東北等6地区について災害の地域性や特殊性がわかるように突発災害と関連させて述べる. 研究班の最近の誇るべき成果の一つとしては, 海外突発災害調査への貢献が挙げられる. 最後に, 今後の展望として, 大学における自然災害研究の方向についても言及する.
