本調査は,昭和59年秋,当時の森文部大臣と,米国国立科学財団(NSF)のブロック長官の間の話合いのもとで始められた「日米科学技術協力(工学分野)の新展開」プロジェクトのうち,コンピュータソフトウェアに係る研究分野について行われた調査研究(日米ホノルルワークショップ,昭和62年1月12日〜14日)の成果をふまえ,今回は,ソフトウェアと言語という基礎面に的を絞って,ワークショップ形式で奥の深い研究討論を行うことを目的とする.ワークショップはテーマ別のセッションに分けられ, 各セッションでは日本側, 米国側からそのテーマを研究している研究者が発表を行い, それについての議論が行われた. 少人数のワークショプであったため, かなり詳細で活発な議論ができた. また, 2日目(1月7日)の午後は, スタンフォード大学に場所を移し, ロボット研究などの人工知能関連の研究グループを訪問し, 意見を交換した. また, このとき, 米国側代表者S.Peters教授が所長をしているCSLI(Center for the Study ofLanguage and Information)への訪問も組まれ, ワークショップには直接参加していない研究者との意見交換もできた. この意見交換の場には, J.Bresnan,M.Kay,T.Winograd,T.Wasow,R.Cohen,D.Israel,J.Barwise,J.Perryなど多くのCSLI研究者が参加し, それぞれのグループに分かれて突っ込んだ意見交換を行った. インフォーマルな雰囲気の中で, 本音を言い合う有意義な交流会であった.ワークショップ全体としても, 計算言語学, 理論言語学, ソフトウェア基礎理論という分野のの異なる研究者が相互の問題意識を議論する中で, 共通の興味を発見するという刺激的なものであった.

In the autumn of 1959, the Minister of Education and Science of the United States of America (NSF) made an investigation into the new development of Japanese-American scientific and technological cooperation (engineering division).(Japan, January 12 - 14, 1962) The results of this study were discussed in depth. The research on the Japanese and American side of the project was carried out by the researchers.
