本研究の目的である、いわゆるスコットランド啓蒙を背景とする十八世紀スコットランド美学史研究において、平成1年度の研究実験は次のようなものである。1.十八世紀スコットランド美学の原典のデ-タ・ベ-スの作成。(作業は継続中)2.十八世紀スコットランド美学の研究誌のデ-タ・ベ-スの作成。(作業は継続中)3.ジェラ-ドに関する原典及び研究の文献一覧のデ-タ・ベ-スの作成。(作業は継続中であるがほぼ完成)4.「天才(genius)」概念をめぐる文献一覧のデ-タ・ベ-スの作成。(作業は継続中)5.スコットランド啓蒙に関する文献一覧のデ-タ・ベ-スの作成。(作業は継続中)6.十八世紀スコットランド美学の原典、研究書、研究論文の収集。(作業は継続中)7.ジェラ-ドの天才論に関する研究論文の作成。要旨ーー西洋の古典的伝統的天才観である神的狂気節とは異質の合理的分析的天才観がジェラ-ドの特徴である。天才を規定するのは創意であり、創意を生む知的能力は主として連合作用をなす想像力であるが、想像力が判断力による規制を受けて働くことで創意は作られる。このようなジェラ-ドの天才論は、同地代のヤングやダフの天才論と比べて、より体系的であり、ロマン派に通じるのではなく新古典派の天才論と言うことができる。
