A Cultural Geographical Study on Regional Characteristics of the Chinese sSciety in Japan : in Comparison with the Chinese Society in Southeast Asia.

本研究的目的在于厘清日本华人社会的地域性特征，并探讨其形成的因素。本研究者于这两年中在横滨京都、科比、大坂、冲绳等地进行了地理实地调查，研究结果如下：1。日本所有的小城镇都是在横滨、科比和长崎等城市建立起来的，这些城市的港口都是在江户政府的最后几天开放的。在日本的中国人主要来自台湾、广东、福建等地。第二次世界大战前，中国人在三个方面都很突出：中国餐馆业、美发业和裁缝业。然而，战后，中国餐馆成为在日华人最重要的经济活动。中国人充分利用他们的文化背景，在横滨、科比和长崎建造了独特的商业化民族城镇。这是中国人适应日本社会最有特色的方式。

This study aimed to clarify regional characteristics of the Chinese society in Japan and to examine factors contributing to the formation of their characteristics. The investigator carried on geographical field works in Yokohama Kyoto, Kobe, Osaka, Okinawa etc. For this two years.The results of this study are summarized as follows :1. All of Chinatowns in Japan were formed in cities, such as Yokohama, Kobe and Nagasaki, whose ports were opened in the last days of the Edo government.2. The Chinese in Japan have consisted of people mostly from Taiwan, Guangdong, Fujian provinces.3. Before the Second World War, Chinese have been distinguished in the three fields : Chinese restaurant business, hair-dressing business and tailoring business. After the war, however, Chinese restaurant business became the most inportant economic activity for the Chinese in Japan.4. The Chinese have made a great use of their cultural backgrounds by making unique commercialized ethnic towns like Chinatowns in Yokohama, Kobe and Nagasaki. This is the most distinctive form Chinese accommodation to Japanese society.
