Tracking vanishing foods: a comparative study of the strategy and dynamics of a 'Chinese' diasporic identity in the UK

This project attempts to track vanishing Chinese dishes, foods, orfood-processing methods in Tyneside and Greater Glasgow. It willinvestigate food practices in Chinese restaurants and delivery servicesin two settings in those two areas: metropolis and suburb. Throughthis investigation, the project aims to identify the contexts and reasonswhy some groups within the Chinese diaspora ignore or even give uppreparing certain food when having their daily meals, making foodmenus, or treating friends. Furthermore, the project intends todisentangle the correlation between food and diasporic identities tounderstand the evolution of food cultures and food-relatedimmigration issues. Using an ethnographic approach, the projectmeans to map the strategies and dynamics of diasporic identities andanswer three questions: when, where, and how re-establishingdiasporic identities occur.
