Urgent Research of the Tombs of Kuntur Wasi.

The excavations were carried out at Kuntur Wasi, an archaeological site in the Department of Cajamarca in northern Peru. The principal aims of this year's research were to continue the excavation of tombs which had been dug into the refill of the temple platform of the Period I of Kuntur Wasi.The results are as the following :1. Excavation of the tomb No. 4.The tomb No. 4 was associated with the offerings :6900 beads for ornamentation, made of stone and shell.1 small stone bowl carved into the shape of human head.100 fragments of gold and silver sheets, probably worked in bird shape.3 pieces of pottery.2. Excavation of the tomb No. 5.This tomb was associated with :1 necklace of bone beads (7pieces).1 necklace of shell beads (20 pieces).5 stone beads.1 bone disc.2 copper discs.3. Excavation of the tomb 7.Since this tomb had been disturbed, some pieces for the offering left out were collected :3 fragments of gold sheet.15 stone and shell beads.1 bone flute.4. The excavation of rectangular construction of the Period I :A non-baked clay figure, painted in red, yellow and green was found on the floor of the construction. The figure was a part of of wall decoration, possibly representing a diety.5. The discovery of a circular sunken court :A test pit done in the southern part of the site revealed the existence of a circular sunken court, of diameter about 16 meters.These findings are new facts, significant for the study of the Formative period of the prehistoric Andean civilization.
