平成2年度は、2年の交付期間の初年度にあたり、次の諸点を課題としていた。第一に、当該研究課題に関する基礎的文献の収集とそのサ-ヴェイ。第二に、東アジア,東南アジア諸国の当該研究課題に関係する研究者との研究文流。第三に、交付に先立つ準備期間における研究成果の発表。第一点については、国別では韓国,台湾,香港,シンガポ-ルのいわゆるアジアNIES及びヴェトナムとマレ-シア,更に東南アジア華僑を資料収集の対象とした。文化・宗教では、儒教,仏教,道教,イスラム教,そしてキリスト教までを収集の範囲とした。言語からは、邦文文献と英文文献、及び若干のマレ-語の文献を含むこととなった。第二点については、順不同で以下の研究機関に直接赴き、討論を行い、文献資料の紹介を受けた。ソウル国立大学校社会科学大学:姜命圭教授、シンガポ-ル国立大学アジア哲学研究所:J・ウォン教授,マラヤ大学経済・行政学部:モハメッド・アリフ教授,ジョモ・K・S博士。なお91年4月初旬に台北大学にも赴く予定。第三点については、日本の経済発展と儒教的勤労観との関連を問う視点から1989年に第8回ニュ-ジ-ランドアジア学会で行った報告に増補改訂を加え,必ずしも儒教的伝統なるものとの明白な関連を言うことはできないという立場に近い英文ペ-パ-を作成し、所属機関の紀要に掲載した(“The Reception of Samuel Smiles's SelfーHelp in the Meiji Enlightenment:A Happy Misunderstanding of the Victorian Work Ethics",in Nihon Fukushi University Journal of Economic Studies,No2,March,1991)なお,平成3年度は学外研究のため、2年目の交付は返上となる。
