项目摘要

ピエ-ル・ガッサンディは、古代原子論の復興者として近代科学の成立に貢献すると同時に、古代懐疑論との対決を通して認識論上、実証主義的立場を切り開したことで知られる。他面、彼は人文主義者として、また正統カトリック教会の僧として、近代思想とヨ-ロッパの思想的伝統との調停を図った。本研究の目的は、西洋近代科学の成立の哲学的背景、並びに哲学的意義を、ガッサンディの思想的営為に即して解明することにあった。この研究目的に到題するために、まず、ガッサンディが同時代の思想家達と行った論争を介して、時代の哲学史的・科学史的状況を浮き上がらせることを試みる同時に、古代原子論や懐疑論等の検討を行い、最後に、彼の主著『哲学集成』の検討を、哲学史的・科学史的文脈において行う、という方針を立てた。また、ガッサンディの思想が後代に与えた影響の検討をも併せて行うことにした。以上の研究課題は、短期間で全体的に達成することの困難な、多大なものであったが、デカルトやフラッド等の論争相手との思想の比較、古代原子論者エピクロスの哲学なでに関して、研究を深めることができた。また、ガッサンディ自身の主著の研究も着実に進行中である。未だ論文として発表するには至っていないものの、これらの研究の成果によって、西洋近代哲学全体の流れを展望することが、一段と容易になったと考える。本研究の成果のいわば副産物として、西洋近代哲学の歴史を概観する単行本の計画が現実化しつつあること、また、ガッテンディと並び、形而上学的志向を以て、西洋近代の初めに体系的に自然主義的立場を押し進めたスピノザの倫理政治思想についての研究が進み、発表段階に至っていることを、最後に御報告しておきたい。
