(研究1)母国語話者の文の文法性に対する言語直観をonーline処理過程の分析を通じて検討した。被験者は文の前半部(文脈部)を読んだ後、これに続いて呈示される後半部(標的部)が文法的に続くかどうかを判断した。先行研究により、文の文法性判断に要するRTは、一般に文の方が非文より短いとされている。従って、もし被験者が文の文法性にsensitiveである(即ち、文法性に対する言語直観を有する)ならば、RTは文<非文となるはずである。しかし、文法性の判断にgradeを仮定する本研究の立場からは、非文法性の高い文型では文<非文とはなっても、非文法性の低い文型では文=非文となると予測される。実験の結果、この予測とは逆に前文型では文=非文となり、後文型では文<非文となった。さらに分析した結果、1.文法性の判断レベルとRTの関係は線形的ではなく、逆U字型をなす、2.文と非文の判断レベル間に差のない文例についてはRTに差がない、つまり被験者は文の文法性にinsensitiveである。2.の結果は、母国語話者の言語直観にはonーline測度で検討すると、Chomsky等が論じるほど明確な基準がない、つまり文法性判断はgradeとして特徴づけられる、ことを意味する。(研究2)前記1.の結果の外的妥当性を検討した。研究1の逆U字型曲線はposthocに描かれたものであるので、ここでは実験計画の中に文の文法性レベルをadhocに組み込んだ。Chomsky(1965)の3種の規則(a.語彙範疇規則、b.句間ないしC.句内にかかる選択制限規則)を逸脱する文に対するRTを比較した。この3種の逸脱文の文法性はかなり非文法的と判断されることがわかっているので、前記1.の逆U字型曲線から予測すれば、RTはa<b<cの関係が得られると予測された。実験の結果、非文法性の判断レベルはb,c間に差がなかったが、a>b=cの関係が得られた。RTはこれに対応してa<b=cの関係が得られ、前記1.の外的妥当性は実証された。
