トリバ-スとウィラ-ドは(1)母親のエネルギ-投資が子の繁殖成功を高め、(2)投資効果が子の性によって異なり、(3)投資が母親の栄養条件により変化するとき、栄養状態のよい母親は投資効果の大きな性の子により多く投資し、栄養状態の悪い母親は投資効果の少ない性の子により多く投資すると考えた.子の性別(息子か娘か)によって母親による子への投資が異なることは「差別的な親の投資」と呼ばれる。本研究の目的は、ニホンザルでも「差別的な親の投資」が実際の現象として認められるか、また認められる場合にそれがトリバ-スらの仮説によって説明されるかの2点であった。この目的のために、多摩動物公園の飼育ニホンザル集団で1991年生まれのアカンボウの母子交渉を観察することにした。ところが、1991年には雄が8頭に対し、雌のアカンボウがわずか1頭しか生まれず、サンプル数に大きな偏りが生じてしまった。しかし、当面の目標を次年度以降にデ-タをつなげることと、性別にかかわらず9組の母子間で個体差を比較することに修正し、予定どおり調査を実施した。9組の母子について、授乳時間、母親の毛づくろい時間、1m以内の近接時間、運搬頻度、雲搬によらない子の母親追従頻度、ひとり遊びと仲間遊び時間、母親の攻撃頻度、拒否行動出現頻度、子のかんしゃく頻度を測定した。各アカンボウを30分間x20回(計10時間)ずつ個体追跡した。期間は9ー11月。その結果,授乳時間,遊び時間には個体間に統計的有意差がなかったが,その他の観察項目には差が認められた.個体差をもたらす要因としては,子の性の他に,子の齢,親の年齢と出産歴・社会的順位,きょうだい数と構成など多くの変数が考えられ,現在分析中である.子の性別だけに注目すると,9頭中唯ーの雌の子に対する母親の態度は,運搬や授乳の拒否行動が最も高く,運搬行動が最低であった.
