今年度の研究においては、古代哲学における魂論の基本的方向を、その背景的文脈に十分注意しつつアリストテレスの魂論を中心に分析し、その哲学的意義を見届けた。以下がその概要である。まず、もののあり方を、それの作用(piomicroniotaepsiloniotanu)・被作用(pialphasigmachiepsiloniotanu)という事態において理解しようとする態度と、そうした作用と被作用を可能とする原理を「能力・機能」(deltaupsironnualphamuiotazeta)、「自然本性」(phiupsironsigmaiotazeta)の名の下に捉えようとする思考とを、ヒッポクラテスの著作などにおいて確認できる。さらにこの作用・被作用への注目による能力と自然本性の特定という態度が、プラトンによって、一つの方法として確立された上で魂について適用されている。アリストテレスもまた、この探究の方法を基本的に継承しながら、さらに彼自身の「可能態」(deltaupsironnualphamuiotazeta)と現実態(epsilonnuepsilonrhogammaepsiloniotaalpha)の概念枠を用いて、独自の魂論を展開する。たとえば、知覚とは、特定の色や臭いに気づく、それを認知するという能力(deltaupsironnualphamuiotazeta)の実現(epsilonnuepsilonrhogammaepsiloniotaalpha)の場面で基本的に理解され、同時にその認知的状態が質料的・身体的な過程を伴っていることも承認される。しかし、知覚という事象そのものは、時空的な物質的過程に還元されず、また他のものに依存して理解されるべきでないという意味において、他の非心的事象に劣らず、アリストテレス的な意味で自然的・原初的(phiupsironsigmaiotakappaomicronzeta)な存在である。こうした自然的・原初的な存在としての心的事象の理解は、心的状態を排除した物質的過程をまず想定した上でそうした過程の一部として心的状態を捉えることの正否を問うという、現代の心身問題をめぐる論争の構図そのものに対して、その想定自身を再考するべきことを示唆する。さらに、アリストテレス解釈上の最大の難問とされる彼の「能動理性」概念も、このような彼の心的事象について現実態から捉えようとする思考の徹底として理解することが可能である。
